Thai Postage Stamps - The Reign of King Rama IX

History of Thai Postage Stamps in The Reign of King Bhumipol Aduldej (King Rama IX) During The Period 1947-1956

H.M. King Bhumipol had ascended to the throne, in the coronation ceremony thereof, on 5th May 1947. To celebrate the occasion, the Post and Telegraph Department issued stamps of the 9th Reign Siam set, for sale in 1947-1949. The stamps were printed in England. It is notable that Thailand has again changed its name on the stamps in this set to "Siam". The stamps consists of 10 denominations as follows: 5,10,20,50 Satang denominations, and 1,2,3,5,10,20 Baht denominations.

During this decade (1947-1956), these had been the issue of different sets of interesting stamps, among them are stamps of the 1950 Coronation Commemorative Issue, the 1953-60th Anniversary of Thai Red Cross Society Commemorative Issue,the 1995 King Naresuan the Great Issue, the 1955 Tao Suranari Issue, and the 1956 Don Chedi Pagoda Issue.

King Naresuan the Great Issue in particular ,consisting of 25-Satang and 80-Satang denominations, and of 1 Baht,2 Baht,and 3 Baht denominations,designed by Mr.Glao Saengxuto, and official of the Post and Telegraph Department, and printed by the Waterlow & Son Co.,Ltd. in England, were highly praised by the printer for their beautiful and significant design, with each angle and every part thereof being artistically drawn, and coordinated,to make King Naresuan's offensive posture,on the elephant's back look all the more impressive and grandiose, as the printer had put it in his praise.

The first stamp issue in the King Ananda Mahidol's reign is known as the "Bang-Pa-In Issue", each set consisting of 12 stamps, Illustrating the royal portrait of H.M.King Ananda Mahidol,rice field plouhing ,and Bang-Pa-In Palace.The purpose of issuing this set of stamps is to mark the change of the reigning King to a new one. The committee was appointed to select pictures to be illustrated on the stamps, whose members were Luang Kovitaphaiwong, Luang Vichitvatakarn, and M.C. Samaichalern Kridakorn,and the stamps were printed in England.

Subsequent issues are the Airmail Issue King Ananda Mahidol Issue,Victory Monument Commemorative Issue Bangkhen Monument Commemorative Issue , and Four states Issue. All these stamps were printed by the Royal Thai survey Department, as the World War II was in Progress.

The set of the stamp issue, Which deserves of remembering for its importance in Thai philatelic history, is "the Four States Issue".The Post and Telegraph Department released stamps of this issue for use in 1944 to mark the annexation to Thailand of four states of Malaysia,namely, Sai Buri,Kelantan,Trengganu, and Perlis state ,early in World War II. After Japan's defeat in the said war, Thailand declared its alliance to the Allies, and had returned the said four states to Britain.During the period over a little of one year, when the four states were under Thai rule, Thailand had introduced in use the stamps of the "Four States Issue" in postal services,and as the local people used currency of decimal (cent) system, Thai Stamps in this issue had therefore been subjected to the use of the said currency.The stamp issue consists of 6 denomination, namely 1,2,3,4,8,15 cent denomination. History of Thai Postage Stamps : Stamps in The Reign of King Prajadhipok (King Rama VII)

The first stamp issued in the reign of King Prajadhipok are called "King Prajadhipok Issue", which were printed in England by the Waterlow & Son Co.,Ltd.,and were released for sale in 1928.The stamps consist of various denominations of 2,3,5,10,15,25,50 and 80 Satang, 20 Baht and 40 Baht denomination

The 150th Anniversary of the Chakri Dynasty Commemorative Issue or Buddha Yodfah Chulaloke Memorial Bridge Issue,was printed during World War II, in England while Thailand was in the initial stage of the democratic rule.The world economic depression at the time had also adversely affected Thailand. As such , stamps had to be printed in the country. The Royal Thai Survey Department had been assigned to do the printing work of the National Day Commemorative Issue.The stamps illustrate the Anantasamakhom Hall and were released on 24th June 1939.

However, all the said stamps were cancelled for use on 1st January 19411, because a large number of stamps were found counterfeited, due to the use of ordinary printing paper.

Another issue of stamps printed by the royal Thai Survey Department is the Chakri Palace Issue, consisting of various denominations.The stamps were released for sale on different occasions,and they were also cancelled for use since 1st January 1942, because a great number thereof were forged.
